INTRODUCTION ------------ I was looking for a utility that would display all the icons in a directory a screenful at a time. Since I couldn't find an adequate one, I decided to write one myself (plus, it would give me a chance to play with Visual Basic). I figured I'd upload the utility to CompuServe so that others could try it and (and perhaps find it useful). This is not shareware - you are not *required* to pay for using it. If you do like it and want to contribute, however, it is appreciated; you may send any amount you like to the address below. I am very interested in any comments, suggestions, ideas you might have. If you think of a feature that would be useful, please let me know; I might add it as time allows. WARRANTY -------- There is NONE. This program works on *my* system as *I* want it to. There is no guaranty that it will work for you as you want. You use it at your own risk. INSTALLATION ------------ 1. Copy ICONVIEW.EXE into any directory of your choice 2. Copy ICONVIEW.INI into your WINDOWS directory 3. Copy THREED.VBX into your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory; if it already exists, keep the one with the later date 4. Make sure that you have VBRUN300.DLL in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. If not, you can download it from CompuServe (MSBASIC) or a wel-stocked BBS 5. Edit the "StartDir" option in ICONVIEW.INI to point to the start-up directory of your choice USAGE ----- There isn't a whole lot of functionality, so the interface is pretty straight-forward. The program starts up by displaying any icons in the start-up directory (set in ICONVIEW.INI). It can display up to 90 icons on a 640x480 screen, 156 on a 800x600 screen. The first screenful of icons takes a little longer to display; subsequent screens should be faster. If there are more icons in the current directory than will fit on the screen, the vertical scroll bar will be enabled. Click anywhere on the bar to scroll a screen at a time (above or below the scroll box depending on the direction you want to scroll). Clicking on the arrows scrolls one icon at a time (this is a painfully slow way to view all icons in a directory). You can also drag the scroll box itself to a desired point on the bar. You can change the directory to view in the directory list box. Below that is the total number of icons in the current directory, and the icon range that you are currently viewing. I've come across several icons (from various sources including CompuServe) that don't load properly; they're probably defective in some way. The program will display a message box telling you the name of the file it couldn't load (and a blank icon will be displayed in it's place). If you check the "Auto Skip" box (which is checked by default), the program won't display the message box. If you click on any icon on the screen, its filename will be displayed above the "Auto Skip" check box. To print the current screen of icons, click on the print button. Clicking on the Stop button quits the program. THE FUTURE ---------- I'm playing with a couple of ideas to enhance this program. It'd be nice to, say, double-click an icon and have that filename appended to a text file, which you could later use in a batch file to keep only the icons you liked. Also, speed improvements would also help. Again, if you have any thoughts about ICONVIEW, please let me know.
